Following the privatisation process in the country’s power sector, electricity workers in the country today threatened to plunge the entire nation into total blackout from November 1 this year if the federal government fails to settle all outstanding entitlements of workers of the former Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).
The workers under the umbrella of National Union of Electricity Employees(NUEE) issued out the threat during a praying and fasting meeting held in Kaduna.
The latest threat comes after a meeting with government authorities during which they were assured that their entitlements would be paid.
The workers gathered at the premises of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, in their thousands to seek God’s intervention on the lingering rift between them and the federal government.
The workers accuse government of being insincere in the settlement of their terminal benefits, and have resolved that there would be total black out across the nation should their demands not be met on or before November 1st.
Although the government had consistently assured to settle their terminal benefits, the angry workers on their part say they will never give up on the struggle until they get what rightly belongs to them.
The Bureau of Public Enterprises, on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the 14 Preferred Bidders for 15 of the 17 Companies created out of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria executed Share Sale Agreements and Concession Agreements (Transaction Documents).
The FGN and Preferred Bidders will work together in order to achieve all the necessary steps for the handover of facilities to Investors.
Industry Agreements were executed between the Successor Companies and the relevant counter parties including the Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria, Nigerian Gas Company, Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trader and Transmission Company of Nigeria.
The Industry Agreements provide the overall framework for the fully commercialised power sector.
The signing of transaction and industry agreements has been regarded by many as the largest development in the power sector of Nigeria to date and is laying the framework to allow for substantial investments to be made into the Nigerian power sector to increase generation capacity, and expand the capacity of transmission and distribution networks.
