A new born baby girl was yesterday found on the disused rail track in Aba, the Abia State commercial centre.
The already dead baby, placed in a black sack, was discovered on Saturday morning by passersby who raised the alarm at the sordid sight.
Witnesses said they were attracted to the scene of the incident by a passerby who, on sighting the baby, raised the alarm, which attracted some other people in the area.
It was observed that the baby was neatly dressed and her corpse still looking fresh, suggesting that she may have been dumped alive by its mother at the early hours and hoped that someone would take pity and pick the baby up.
A witness, who gave his name as David, said the baby may have died out of suffocation shortly after being dropped, adding that the baby would have been saved by passersby if she was not left in a sack to suffocate.
Another woman in her 40s, who was seen weeping uncontrollably, expressed regret over the incident while she cursed and condemned whoever was behind the act.
“Why would a heartless mother dump her baby on the rail way even with the prevalence of maternity homes where babies are sold?” she wondered.
Sunday Trust’s investigation further showed that the area, which is around Eziukwu where the baby was found, harbours women of easy virtue while petty traders also do their businesses there.
