G-2 Governors: ‘I stand by my principles’, Sule Lamido says after meeting Jonathan, others

The crucial meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and two aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party ended on Sunday night with Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa saying “I stand by my principles” after the meeting.
Mr. Lamido and Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger were among the group of seven aggrieved PDP governors who formed the ‘New PDP.’
However when the ‘New PDP’ announced last week that it was merging with the APC, the two governors dissociated themselves from the merger, saying they would await the outcome of their meeting with Mr. Jonathan.
The five governors who joined the APC were Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) and Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto).
Shortly before the commencement of the meeting with the President, there was another meeting at a separate venue in the presidential villa that was attended by Vice President Namadi Sambo, PDP governors and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim.
Details of the earlier meeting, which started at about 7:30 p.m. and ended at about 8:40 p.m., was not disclosed to journalists.
Governors present at the meeting included Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta), Theodore Orji (Abia), Isa Yuguda (Bauchi), Jonah Jang (Plateau), Ibrahim Shema (Katsina), Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa), Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Martins Elechi (Ebonyi), Sullivan Chime (Enugu), Idris Wada (Kogi), and Liyel Imoke (Cross River).
The deputy governors of Niger and Kaduna were also at the meeting.
After the conclusion of the meeting held at House 7 in the Presidential Villa, the meeting between the president and the aggrieved governors commenced at the First Lady’s Conference room.
After the meeting with Mr. Jonathan, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP, Tony Anenih, told journalists at the State house that the party was moving to restore confidence and trust among its members. He said there would be a series of other meetings this week to resolve issues within the party.
“We have had our meeting presided over by the President with the Vice President in attendance. We had very useful meeting, the summary of it all is that we are happy that we are moving to restore confidence and trust” he said.
In his statement to journalists after the meeting, the Jigawa State Governor said “I stand by my principles, which is one Nigeria which is based on law and order”.
Mr. Aliyu also restated that he was still a member of the ruling party.
“I am a member of PDP and that is why I am here at this meeting and as I said before the whole idea was to bring sanity back to our party and that is what we are still discussing,” he said.
“We are meeting again on Sunday but there will be series of meetings before then.”
Present at the meeting were Governors Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Liyel Imoke (Cross River) and Idris Wada (Kogi).
