The All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership crisis in Benue state deepened at the weekend as factions within the party engaged in a fight of supremacy over an attempt to sensitize members on party registration.
Daily Trust gathered that a faction of the party believed to be headed by Prof. Daniel Saror and Alhaji Usman Abubakar (Young Alhaji) had organised an awareness campaign rally to mobilize members for its forthcoming nationwide registration at Winika hotel, Gboko.
But, the other faction led by the Senate minority leader, George Akume moved swiftly to stop the exercise from holding at the venue which forced the Saror group to relocate to Akaaka Private Square in the town where they were again driven away.
It was further learnt that the Saror group known by the name ‘APC Pathfinders’ finally settled to hold the exercise at Ambassador Gbasha hotel in Gboko under the supervision of its acting secretary, Prof. Leonard Shilgba and Abubakar (Young Alhaji).
At the end of the exercise, the 10 persons invited from each of the 23 local governments for the meeting including supporters from Gboko and its environs were given sensitization documents for registration.
The attendees were also told to prepare for the inauguration of the temporary leadership expected to be inaugurated by the national leadership of the party within two weeks.
Earlier, Abubakar told journalists that Akume’s attempt at frustrating the exercise was an indication that he wanted to monopolize affairs of the APC in the state for personal gains.
But one of Akume’s strong supporters, Nelson Alapa said Akume’s move to stop the meeting was because he was not aware of it and that he considered the exercise an illegality.
