Borno Governor Survives Boko Haram Assassination Attempt!

Kasshim Shettima

In what appeared to be a well planned attempt to take out the Governor of Borno State, Kasshim Shettima, members of the Boko Haram sect ambushed his convoy as he returned from Bama and Malari where he had gone to pay a condolence visit to the town after a devastating terror attack. The towns came under Boko Haram fire on Wednesday.

The daring gunmen hit the official vehicle of the Commissioner for Higher Education, Alhaji Bello Ayuba who was lucky to have escaped alive. The Commissioner’s vehicle was badly hit such that the hail of bullets damaged the engine compartment and demobilized the vehicle completely as the convoy returned from Bama on Sunday evening.

The gunmen who were stationed along the Maiduguri-Bama road narrowly missed the Governor who passed just before the commissioner.

The terrorists were later dislodged by soldiers who engaged them in a battle that lasted for about 30 minutes before the insurgents fled into the Sambisa forest.

The attack was confirmed by the State Commissioner of Police, CP Tanko Lawal and the spokesman of the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army, Col Mohammed Dole.

The Governor has promised to help rebuild the towns destroyed by the insurgents.

Meanwhile, President Jonathan had on Monday evening chided the Governor over his comments on the attacks. The President threatened to withdraw troops from the troubled state.
