Dozens of villagers were on Thursday killed  along Gulumba-Dikwa road in Dikwa local government area of Borno State when gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram attacked.

The gunmen, who were dressed in Army uniform, laid ambush on the lonely rural highway where they  stopped every vehicle, ordered the passengers to disembark and then shot those they didn’t like their faces.

A very lucky trader said he was allowed to live because he was not coming from Maiduguri.

“They wore uniforms like soldiers; we thought they were genuine military personnel, but when they shot some people dead, it dawned us that we were in trouble,” Abba said.

“They stopped eight commercial taxis and shot many of the passengers before leaving with the vehicles,” another source said.

The state police commissioner,  Lawan Tanko, who confirmed the incident, said “I am yet to get the detailed report from my DPO, but the incident happened.”

Dikwa is 85km away from Maiduguri,  the Borno State capital.
