National Conference: Yoruba leaders roll out 11-point agenda

Yoruba leaders of thoughts who have been meeting in Lagos ahead of the proposed national conference slated for March 2014, have rolled out what they called an 11-point agenda to be pursued at the summit.

The Yoruba leaders, who converged under the aegis of “Pan Yoruba Agenda for 2014 National Conference” while addressing journalists at a briefing, stated that the 11-point agenda was part of the overall communique issued at the end of their two-day deliberations.

While reading the communique on behalf of other leaders, the founder of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Dr Fredrick Fasehun said the first and most sacrosanct of all the demands is the need to have a brand new constitution that will reflect the true aspiration of Nigerian populace.

“The National Conference must produce a new Nigerian Constitution not subject to any amendment whatsoever of the Executive, legislative or judiciary arm of the current government and that the Constitution must be endorsed by the generality of Nigerians in a referendum with the qualification for participation being adult suffrage,” a part of the statement read.

On the return of the country to parliamentary system of government, the Yoruba leaders said it remained the most cheapest form of government which also gave room for regional development.
They described the current presidential system as cumbersome and expensive.

The summit of the leaders also advocated for integration into the mainstream of South western region, the Yoruba kindred in the North-Central region, whom they said have been balkanised into Kogi and Kwara States.

Other demands as listed in the communique include the need to remove “no go areas” in the agenda of the conference, devolution of power from central to states, respect for the rights of minorities, resource control, among others.

While speaking with journalists, the Chairman of the gathering, Dr Tunji Braithwaite said the National Conference is considered historical, no force within or outside government should attempt to stop it or teleguide its outcome.
