Dr Andrew Pocock

The British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Dr Andrew Pocock, on Monday in Abuja said the British Government would participate fully in the Nigeria’s centenary celebration.

Pocock stated this after signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the British Government and the National Space Research and Development Agency on capacity building and technology transfer.

He said, “We have a 100 years’ partnership in historical terms. It is actually quite interesting and important to be signing scientific agreement now for the next 100 years of partnership.

“We have a British Minister for Africa coming to Abuja later this week to take part in the centenary celebrations; he is the Prime Minister’s envoy. He is bringing good will message from Her Majesty, the Queen, to what is a very important common wealth country for her.

“We are fully participating in the amalgamation ceremony. The accent is not just on a 100 years of history, it’s the next 100 years.”

Pocock, who is also British Permanent Representative to ECOWAS, noted that the UK government had been working with the Nigerian government, cutting across various areas and issues.

He said the British government was pleased to work with the Nigerian government particularly in the use of outer space.

He added that the existing collaboration had been of mutual benefit to both the Nigeria and the British government.

Earlier, the Director-General of NASRDA, Prof. Seidu Mohammed, said Nigeria had been having collaboration with the British Government in the past 100 years.
