FG prudent with Confab budget —- Gani Adams

Gani Adams

Gani Adams, the leader of the Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, has dismissed criticism from some quarters that the N7 billion amount earmarked for the forthcoming conference as being too much for the three months duration of the dialogue.

Adams, who is representing the South West geo-political zone on the platform of Socio -Political/Cultural and Ethnic Nationality at the conference stated this over the weekend in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

Gani Adams said the “N7 billion is not even enough to convene the National Conference of such importance, if a State in Niger Delta is collecting nothing less than N26 billion in a month, then Nigeria should not succumb to insinuations that the expenditure on the Confab is outrageous.”

He expressed optimism that the National Conference would chart a new course that would enable Nigeria overcome all the security challenges confronting her as a nation.

With specific mentioning of the insurgency by the Boko Haram Islamic extremists, OPC National Coordinator emphasised that the calibre of participants assembled for the national dialogue would evolve a better solution that would permanently silence the menace as well as restore a new order which the people and government need for the country to move ahead.

“The Confab will bring about a thorough deliberation on our problems, including Boko Haram insurgency and I think the Boko Haram insurgency will be reduced if not eradicated after the Confab. The Confab will bring new Constitution structure and the new structure will not give hope for criminals to escape justice”.

Adams, who described all the 442 delegates for the conference as credible Nigerians that genuinely meant well for the betterment of Nigeria, also emphasised that the conference will remain a landmark convergence of stakeholders in the history of the country.

“I think this is quite different from all Confabs the country has ever had considering the fact that the federal government considered all sectors this time. It has been Confabs since I was born, I may not know about the Pre-Independence Conferences, but I knew that of 1979, I knew of 1995 – 1996 and even the processes that led to the 1999 Constitution, which did not give enough consideration to every Nigeria sector”.

He commended the Federal Government for considering slots for various groups and sectors in the country, stating that with that development, the conference will reshape the nation constitution, structure and polity

“Through the modalities of this National Conference, a lot of groups were given slots; who is who in the country were considered. From that you could see that the Confab would reshape our Constitution, structure and polity and thereafter, the country will move forward.”
