A 28-year-old Bureau de Change operator, Kasim Ahmed, on Thursday appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding a woman of N420, 000.
Ahmed of No. 9, Abimbola St., Agege, is facing a five-count charge of obtaining money under false pretences, conspiracy, intent to defraud and stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Okoye, told the court that the offences were committed sometime between Sept.1, 2013 and Jan. 27 at Cele Estate, Addo Road, Ajah.
He said the accused, who impersonated the former husband of one Fausat Adesina, the complainant, obtained the money on the pretext that he would import a car and generator for her.
According to Okoye, the complainant claimed that she was an ex-wife of the Oniru of Iru community on Victoria Island and that she met Ahmed on the facebook impersonating Oniru.
“The complainant said that she met her former husband sometime in September 2013 on Victoria Island and some money exchanged hands.
“She said she used the medium of the facebook to thank him not knowing that she was dealing with a fake facebook account of the traditional ruler.
“During the chats, the “kabiyesi” who told her that to settle their rift, he would send her a car.
“He promised her that the car would be shipped in, and that she would only need to pay N420, 000 for clearing as she was introduced to Ahmed as the clearing agent.
“Immediately she paid the money into Ahmed’s account, the facebook account of the “Oniru of Iru” was deleted and the numbers used in calling her too were switched off,” he said.
He said Ahmed was later tracked down through the bank account the N420, 000 was paid into.
Okoye said the offences contravened Sections 285, 312, 323, 378 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Ahmed, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Miss A.O. Awogboro, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned further hearing to April 4.
