ECO Bank in crisis

The crisis rocking Ecobank Transnational Incorporation (ETI) is deepening as it sues its former head of strategy, David Lawson, for allegedly maligning the Chief Executive Officer of the bank, Thierry Tanoh.
A media report on Tuesday said ETI is having a new problem with Lawson because of an email he wrote, entitled “Major corporate governance issues at Ecobank”. The report said the he indicated in the mail that the bank was at risk because of poor leadership.
The new crisis emanates from alleged misstatement of the bank’s 2012 performance by the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in August.
Speaking on the crisis, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of APT Securities and Funds Limited, Malam Kasimu Kurfi, believed that the crisis rocking the bank is having negative impact on the bank shares.
He said the market is aware of the issue which is why there is no significant appreciation in the stocks despite the release of third quarter result.
On the implication of the SEC investigation on the bank, Kurfi said the market is awaiting the outcomes which will determine the next line of action to be taken.
“Don’t forget that ETI has been listed across West African exchanges, therefore whatever action taken by SEC may have effect across the region”, he said.
Another stockbroker, who wants to remain anonymous, said adherence to corporate governance has been a strong challenge rocking corporate bodies.
He said: “ETI is known for its transparency and integrity. This makes it difficult for the chairman to remain in that position.”
Reacting to the share price of ETI, he said the market had reacted to the challenge when the share price dropped to around N13.00.
“The regulators have much to do. The CBN must have been seeing this in the account of ETI, what has it done to curb it before it escalated to that? Also, corporate governance must not only be sung but must be acted upon,” he said.
It would be recalled that the SEC had on September 16, said the investigation into ETI corporate governance issue was still on.
In order to take all necessary steps to speedily conclude the investigation into alleged corporate governance breaches at ETI, SEC engaged the services of KPMG, a leading accounting, audit and management consulting firm to complement the efforts of the SEC in investigating the matter.
This allegation of mismanagement has led to the departure of ETI chairman, Lawson.
The bank’s governance problems surfaced in April when Nigeria’s central bank notified it of Lawson’s failure to repay N1.4 billion ($8.79 million) in debts sold to AMCON, the state-owned “bad bank”, and a further N1.6 billion owed to Ecobank by businesses associated with him.

Stella Oduah’s Armoured Cars Will Buy 51 Police Patrol Vehicles' - Gov Fashola

During the 7th annual Town Hall Meeting on Security held in Lagos, Governor Fashola said the two BMW cars bought for Stella Oduah will purchase 51 patrol vehicles for the Nigerian Police.

“It is sad to know that the Federal Government that allocate three patrol vehicles for one state police command of 370, 000 police men, is unable to resolve how N255 million was used to purchase 2 saloon vehicles for one officer.

It is a very grave irony. The cost of average vehicle needed to patrol the state is just N5 million. And with such fund, we will have put at least 51 patrol vehicles on the road, patrolling the streets of Lagos.”

"In spite of all this, they resist the idea of a state police.

The money from the fund was in the last one year used to provide vehicles for the Nigerian Prison Service, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, National Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC and indeed the airport wing of the Nigerian police, is funded from this money.

And it is the same aviation ministry that manage the airport that we had this very odious car scandal of N255 million.

Police stop 4,000 protesters calling for cancellation Anambra Election

About 4,000 aggrieved women protesting the plan to conduct the Supplementary election in AnambraState were Friday stopped by security operatives who  said they were acting on  orders from above.
The angry women who described themselves as “Anambra Women” carried posters which inscriptions which read: “INEC rigging, Bad  for Anambra, We no go gree,”” Jega Must go,” “Jega-Jaga must go,”Jega rig Sokoto election, not Anambra,“ “Anambra shall be free,”Cancel Anambra Guber Election  now,”New Election , February 2014,Reject INEC results 2013,” “Cancel Anambra Election, sack Jega.”

They called for conduct of a fresh election just as they said the scheduled  Supplementary election of November 30 march would not hold.
They marched from Aroma junction but were pushed back by the police as they cornered to enter the route leading towards INEC state headquarters  Office. The  police arrived in six trucks to block their way. The women who continued to sing abusive songs  insisted that they and the freedom as provided in the constitution to assembly, associate, and express their grievances, but the police denied them access saying they had no authority to demonstrate.
The women opted to stay put at the Aroma junction while the police kept surveillance for the most of seven hours the women staged the protest.
A spokesperson for the “ Anambra Women” who imply identified herself as an angry voter from Obosi, said the protest was aimed at letting the authorities that the Supplementary election billed to hold Saturday,November 30 this ear would hold .
She stated that what took place on November 16, this year was a charade saying INEC compromised nd sided with a political party and the Presidency to thwart the people’s choice, adding that the rtest as as a result of the fact that an unpopular candidate was being imposed  on the people through selection rather than election.
The women spokesperson stated that in Obosi where she holds from, there as no election, and INEC scheduled to Armoured Vehicles (APC) in addition to 8 trucks loaded with police, army and other security operatives  for just one ward to scare the people .
According to her, INEC announced that election did not hold at Obosi but wondered the ward was not featured as one of the areas where the supplementary election would hold on Saturday

Joining APC not solution to PDP crisis – LAMIDO

THE heat generated by the defection of five of the aggrieved G-7 Peoples Demo-cratic Party, PDP, governors to All Progressives Congress, APC, continued yesterday with one of the governors, Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, saying joining APC was not the solution to the crisis, and called for everyone to join hands in fighting impunity in the country.
Lamido, who did not defect to APC, spoke as the court re-instated National Secretary, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola said his expulsion by the national leadership of PDP would not stand even as the party said, yesterday, that it was not losing sleep over the defection of the five governors and leaders of the Alhaji Kawu Baraje-led new PDP.
LAMIDO
LAMIDO
Meanwhile, Governor Murtala Nyako, who also decamped to APC, has asked his supporters to join the opposition party en mass, with PDP House of Representatives members saying they would wade into the crisis next week.
Lamido made the comments, yesterday, while receiving for-mer Head of State, General Ab-dusalami Abubakar (rtd), who was in Dutse for the commi-ssioning of Jigawa State Judicial Complex.
Lamido, Abdulsalami’s comments
Lamido told Abdulsalami, “the democracy you nurtured is today being cannibalised. The present crises bedeviling the party for quite some time now will not augur well for the nascent democracy.
“The PDP crisis is a problem not only for the party; it can equally consume the whole nation.”
Responding, Abubakar said it had become necessary for Nigerians to fight for peace as no meaningful development could be achieved without peace.
Directing his supporters in Adamawa State to register en masse with the APC yesterday, Nyako said the opposition has good intentions for the state and the nation at large.
The directives came as PDP flags were being removed from public institutions across the state.
Nyako gave the directives yesterday at a meeting of stake-holders of APC and the nPDP at the Government House, Yola.
The governor said that PDP had betrayed the people of Adamawa in spite of all they did in ensuring PDP victories at all levels in the last general elections.
He described the plight of the people of Adamawa under PDP as that of Israelites under Pharaoh, necessitating their mass exodus.
The governor debunked insinuations that he was working for his son’s political ambition, saying his son will not contest any election in 2015.
Nyako said: “My son will not contest any election in 2015. What we are doing is for peace, progress and unity of the state and the nation in general.
“The way PDP is operating in Adamawa is inimical to peace and unity of the state.
“APC offered better opportu-nity with level playing field for everyone. There is no new comer or old member in APC, so go and mobilise your people to join the popular movement.”
PDP Reps to mediate
Apparently disturbed by the development, PDP Reps, yesterday, agreed in a meeting to interface with President Goodluck Jonathan on the way forward, next week.
In a closed-door meeting held at the Reps’ wing of the National Assembly complex, they expressed disappointment in the manner the crisis was being handled and agreed that all the members would meet with Mr. President and bare their minds.
The meeting, which was chaired by the Deputy Speaker, Emeka Ihedioha, resolved to work as one large family and look issues dispassionately.
A front line member, who attended the meeting told Vanguard that “we have decided to work together as one.”
Asked whether it was both the PDP and nPDP Reps that met, he said, “Yes. We all met and there was no division of any sort. We met as one body.
“We are going to see Mr. President and tell him how we feel and how we intend to serve our fatherland without involving our members in whatever is happening outside the House.”
Another source said: “Those who are parading themselves as our representatives at the Presidential Villa are not selfless people. We have agreed to deal with Mr. President collectively.
…rule out House
leadership change
Meanwhile, the House said yesterday that despite the defection of five nPDP govern-ors, nothing will change in its leadership as no member has so far communicated to the leader-ship of his intention to move.
Deputy spokesman of the House, Mr. Victor Ogene (APGA, Anambra), said until such a time when members formally declare their intention, the House remains the way it is.
He said Section 68 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, provides that members can only defect to another political party in group base on merger agreement, but that what was happening in PDP cannot be defined as such.
He said: “In politics, things like this happen. But as a House, we remain one. Section 68 (1) (g) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, says people cannot cross carpet in group except in merger situation.
“But defection has to do with individual member. So if they’re defecting, the proper thing must be done by activating that section of the constitution.
“As at now, we are not aware of any member defecting to another party. Remember, going by our rule, until a party has 181 members, you can’t talk of having the majority.”
Oyinlola reacts
Also yesterday, Oyinlola said that his expulsion from the party as recommended to the party’s NWC by Alhaji Umaru Dikko-led Disciplinary Committee would not stand.
In a statement by his Principal Secretary, Femi Adelegan, Oyinlola, who noted that democracy was on trial, said: “The recommendations of the committee will not stand, as nobody can build something on nothing; and falsehood on truth.
“The committee does not exist because its composition was not ratified by the National Executive Committee of PDP, which is statutorily empowered to approve the composition of the body.
“They really worked with great speed in their feverish ambition of getting rid of Oyinlola before the hearing of his suit at an Abuja Federal High Court, challenging the validity of illegalities.
“No sane or decent person would be surprised at the recommendations of the illegally constituted Disciplinary Committee, which from the outset shouldered a heavy burden of legitimacy, integrity, lack of respect for fair play, principles of natural justice and the Rule of Law.”
Cross carpeting of disloyal elements, not merger— PDP
The national leadership of PDP, yesterday, took a swipe at the five governors and some members who defected to the APC, saying it was not a merger, but an opportunistic cross carpeting of disloyal elements, reiterating that as a party it would not lose sleep over the action.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, PDP said a tree that is pruned blossoms the more.
It added that there was no way the fusion of Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje-led splinter group of PDP into APC could be described as merger because the group was never a party, adding that the Bamanga Tukur-led NWC stands as the only PDP known to law.
Metuh said: “Our attention has been drawn to press reports and statements from some persons passing off the cross carpeting of a group of former PDP members to APC as a merger.
“This information is false and is intended to mislead the public. What happened was not a merger. You can only talk of a merger where there were two distinct parties.
“In this case, there is only one party, APC. The so-called nPDP was never a party. This was established on October 10, when a Lagos High Court gave judgment against then PDP and on October 11, when the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, wrote the nPDP to say that the Alhaji Bamanga Tukur-led PDP is the only recognised party by that name.”

A sad devt— Anenih
Meanwhile, Chairman of PDP Board of Trustees, BoT, Chief Tony Anenih, yesterday, described the move of the five governors as sad and urged members of the party not to be moved or disturbed by it.
Chief Anenih expressed satisfaction that the party leadership, President Jonathan, former president Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida, former National Chairmen, Barnabas Gemade and Ahmadu Ali as well as himself “invested enough energy, commitment, maturity and sincerity in the collective effort at reconciliation.
“I had expected the governors to stay on in the party, which has offered them a unique opportunity to serve their people.
“Surprisingly, they decided to abandon their home and platform to take up tenancy in an opposition party even when it was apparent that the effort of Mr. President for genuine reconciliation was enough for them to see good reason to show restraint and understanding. However, as adults, the final decision was and remains theirs.
“I would like to urge our party members and sympathizers not to be disturbed by the exit of some of our governors but to continue to mobilize grassroots support for our party, Mr. President, and his Transformation Agenda.”

Protesters Disrupt Award Of Honour To Aviation Minister Stella Oduah In London

PROTESTERS disrupted a Nigerian awards
ceremony in central London last night expressing
anger at the awarding of an honour to aviation
minister Stella Oduah by the Global Peace
Movement (GPM).

Drama at awards ceremomy at Raddison Hotel in London as protesters disrupt award of honour to Stella Oduah by Mike Uyi's Global Peace Movement. Kaduna State governor Mukhtar Yero just calmly sits through it all

At a glitzy ceremony at the Radisson Blu Portman
Hotel in London, the GPM conferred awards on
Ms Oduah, the Kaduna State governor Mukhtar
Yero and Nnamdi Udoh, the managing director of
the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency.
Halfway through the ceremony though, protests
broke out as several protesters felt it was
inappropriate to be honouring Ms Oduah.
Apart from the fact that Ms Oduah is under
investigation over the purchase two bullet-proof
BMW's valued at $1.6m, protesters said she
should also be held culpable for the recent spate
of air crashes in Nigeria. President Goodluck
Jonathan is under pressure to sack Ms Oduah
over the car purchases, which were said to have
been bought surreptitiously and she is due to face
the Senate to answer questions about air safety.
Marian Awolowo of the campaign group Nigerian
Global Awakening, one of the protesters who
disrupted the ceremony, said: "The management
of the aviation industry should be questioned
because we have had a spate of air crashes
recently and the minister is under investigation for
fraud. With thousands of people still grieving, it is
not the right time to be giving Stella Oduah a
peace award and I told Mike Uyi to postpone it.
"It is very insensitive and an abuse to all the
victims and their families of the Dana Air crash to
be giving Ms Oduah a peace award of all things.
We Nigerians are not that wicked, do not worship
money that much and are not that low."
Governor Yero was there in person to receive his
award from the GPM president Michael Uyi but
Ms Oduah and Mr Udoh sent representatives.
Victor Oche Elias, Ms Oduah's special adviser put
up a spirited defence in support of his boss,
saying she was not responsible for the accidents
as they were mainly down to pilot error and
added that the cars were bought for the safety of
visiting dignitaries.
Mr Elias added: "I am a trained aviator myself
and I can tell you that 70% of air accidents are
down to pilot error. In the case of the Dana Air
accident, the pilot knew there was a fault and
should have returned to Abuja but continued
flying on to Lagos because he wanted to catch a
flight to India for a wedding.
"As per the cars, they are not for the minister's
personal use. Recently, the head of the
International Civil Aviation Organisation visited
Nigeria and refused to step out of the plane until
a bullet proof car was provided for him."
After a series of heated exchanges, the protesters
were later removed on the instructions of the
GPM president Mr Uyi and the awards ceremony
continued. Mr Uyi said he was not bothered with
the protests as the GPM investigates whoever it
gives awards to properly and is always certain
that they are deserving of such honours.
He added: "We are never perturbed because we
always carry out a full investigation into a person
before conferring an award upon them. The GPM
is known to take risks in carrying out it
assessments and we even went to Iraq to inspect
their presidential palaces when it was claimed
there were weapons of mass destruction there."
Accepting his award, Governor Yero said he
believed it was a vindication of what his
administration is trying to achieve in Kaduna
State by restoring peace and making it an
investment destination. According to governor, his
government is also trying to empower local
people through youth and women's programmes
whereby they are given capital to start
commercial operations.
Governor Yero added: "Kaduna is now an
investment-friendly state in sectors such as
agriculture, tourism, power, mining, solid minerals,
housing and transportation. One of the things we
have done is guarantee the safety of such
investment and made the state a conducive
environment for investors."
According to the governor, he is also in London to
discuss a £500m investment programme in the
state agricultural sector by a British investor. He
added that the state is making some progress
because it is currently enjoying peace among the
disparate religious and ethnic groups that make
up its populace.

I was arrested in Benin over alleged Boko Haram link - Asari Dokubo

The Leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force and former President of Ijaw Youth Council, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, said he was arrested at the Republic of Benin over an allegation from Nigeria that he was a member of the Boko Haram Islamic sect.
He however attributed his travails in the hands of the Beninoise authorities
to those opposed to the 2015 re-election ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan.
The NDPVF boss who appeared unperturbed by the arrest also said the crises “has raised my profile in that country.”
Speaking with Journalists on Friday night during his arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja he also described as lies, reports that President Jonathan sent a Presidential Jet to fly him into Nigeria from the Republic of Benin.
He said, “Crisis is normal, it can also happen here in Nigeria, it can happen anywhere in the world. The people and government of Republic of Benin have no problem with me. But if people alleged that somebody is a leader of Boko Haram, the government of that country will investigate the person.
“The allegation has much to do with 2015 because when your read comments on social media, you find out that somebody who is against President Goodluck Jonathan, said they should vilify me and make sure I die before 2015. But they are not going to succeed. I am not going to die. I will be present in 2015, and I will do what I am going to do to ensure that Jonathan wins in 2015. There is nothing they can do about it. This is their last fight and it is so unfortunate that the way and manner they are going with it shows how immature they are.”
He also denied that he was flown into Abuja in a Presidential Jet saying it is not true.
Asari said, “I just arrived from Cotonu. I drove in my car from Cotonu to Lagos Airport where I boarded Aero Contractors flight to Abuja. The report is not true. No presidential jet was sent to me.
“That report is an instigated falsehood. Most of the things that have always been written against President Goodluck Jonathan is also falsehood. A section of the press in Nigeria is manipulated and instigated.”
“I do business in Cotonu, and I have been living in Cotonu since 2008. Politically, people who are in Nigeria are trying to fabricate lies, which are not verifiable, and send it to the government of Republic of Benin. So I was taken for interrogation and they found that the allegations were false, and I was promptly released with over 20 of my staff who were also taken in.”
Asari also spoke on his meeting with officials of government of Republic of Benin after his interrogation.
“I have met with the top and powerful people in Republic of Benin, since I went to that country. I have never had any reason to meet with their government officials, but this crisis has made it possible for me to meet with all the top government functionaries of the Republic of Benin. The crises has raised my profile in that country”, he boasted.

Should couples hide secrets from each other?

L-R: Gbadebo, Ndidi and Onasanya

Secrets are the nightmares of  many relationships today. Some say relationships can’t work without secrets so as to save the marriage, while others say disclosure of secrets to one’s partner helps build trust and security in a relationship. Whichever way, Saturday PUNCH asked for the opinions of people, if it is right or wrong for couples to disclose their secrets to each other.
It depends on the type of secret
Aiyejuni Oluwatoyin
I will say ‘yes’ because it depends on the type of the secret. It is normal for everyone to have a past; you may choose to share or not to share. For instance, if a man had a bad past and later changed in life, that secret is between him and God, and not him and his wife. If the secret is personal, it is between me and God and I will not disclose it to anyone, but if it is within the marriage circle and friends, I will disclose it.
If there is love, nothing should be hidden
Atinuke Ogbere
No, they should not hide secrets if there is love. But I also believe that disclosing secrets to your partner will depend on what kind of person you’re dealing with. Some can keep secrets while some others might discuss them nonchalantly with others, which can lead to a big problem. As for me, my husband and I know everything about each other because we are friends. So I disclose everything and anything to him.
It’s not good to hide secrets
Temiotan Aiyeolowo
No, it’s not good for couples to keep secrets in their relationship because there is nothing wrong with disclosing your secrets to each other. When you are married, you are meant to share everything.  There is no way you can hide your secrets from your partner for too long because when it gets to a time, you will need someone to advise or solve that problem. So there is no way my wife can hide any secrets from me that I won’t know because I disclose mine to her. There is nothing wrong with it.
Nothing should be hidden
Adeshola Bankole
Couples should disclose secrets to themselves for the sake of the future. In my opinion, I believe nothing should be hidden because no one can predict the future. I will disclose everything to my partner because we are married, so we are meant to know things about each other.
For the sake of love and peace
Abejoye Olagoke
For the sake of love and peace, I will tell my secrets to my partner but not everything because there are some things that are not meant to be said. Most times, couples don’t tell their secrets because they feel it could destroy their relationship. As for me, it is good to disclose part, but not all.
Don’t hide secrets for future sake
Ebelechukwu Gbadebo
It’s not good to hide secrets because disclosing past and present secrets to your partner will help the marriage. There is also a saying that ‘two heads are better than one’. So if couples come together to share their secrets, it helps for the sake of the future. Most times, the reason why some men don’t open up is because they believe their wives will take advantage of it. But in my own case, I disclose everything to my husband because of the future.
It’s all about trust
Chinedu Chukwunnamaka
It is good to know the kind of spouse you have before you start spilling to him or her. If you trust her enough to tell her, there is nothing wrong with it, but if you don’t trust her enough, then it’s good not to tell, so that the marriage won’t break. I believe if there is trust, you will be able to achieve a lot with your partner by sharing things together. So it’s good to share secrets if you’re sure of each other.
You can’t tell men everything
Adelabu Ndidi
Yes, it is advisable to hide your secrets from your partner. We are human beings and an African man will always be an African man. It’s not everything you can tell your spouse because there are some secrets that you can handle and there are some that you can’t handle. And sometimes, disclosing secrets to your partner can lead to divorce or maltreatment from your husband or his family, so it is not advisable to disclose everything.
It keeps the marriage secured
Oluwatosin Onasanya
It is good because it helps to secure the marriage.  For instance, my wife and I run the same business, so everything concerning the business, we share and we sit to plan together. Even if she is not around, I report to her and she does the same to me. No one can predict the future and for security reasons, it’s good to always open up. Frankly speaking, there are some secrets you can’t tell but they should be the minor ones. To me I disclose everything to my wife, because it has helped to build our relationship.
To avoid unneccessary reference in future
Modupe Inan
Yes, they should. This is to prevent your partner from making reference to it unnecessarily in the future. Also, it depends on the secrets. If the secret you tell your spouse is not the one that will get him angry, then you can tell, but if it is the one that will make him angry, then I will advise you don’t disclose it at all. It’s not everything I will tell him, so that he won’t use it against me in the future, because some men do that.
