Tanker, five others burnt in Edo robbery operation

The Federal Road Safety Corps in Edo, on Monday, confirmed that an armed robbery attack caused multiple accidents involving six trucks on the Benin-Ore  Expressway.

FRSC toll-gate (Benin) Unit Commander, Mr. Adewale Ameen, who confirmed the accident, however said no life was lost in the incident.

Ameen said six trucks involved in the accident were burnt to ashes.

“As I speak with you, the fire is still raging and our men are on standby to control traffic,” he said.

According to Ameen, the armed robbery attack, which occurred around KM 33 on the Benin-Ore section of the expressway on Saturday night, led to a gridlock on the highway.

He said, “The robbery attack led to the fall of a container across the road and as two other unsuspecting trucks got to the scene, in an attempt to escape from the robbers, rammed into the container.

“But the unfortunate thing was that a truck, laden with 33,000 litres of petrol, rammed into the other trucks which caught fire. But I can confirm that no live was lost in the accident and our men are on the ground to control traffic.

“We have completely blocked the Ore side of the expressway and have diverted traffic to the Benin lane.  We also are appealing to motorists and travelers from the Lagos end to go through Ogbemudia farms.”
