As the debate on whether or not to remove the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, continued, PDP governors met in Abuja on Thursday to further deliberate on the matter.
In an apparent reference to the meeting, Tukur has appealed to the members of the party, especially the governors, to eschew bitterness and embrace forgiveness.
Investigations by our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday showed that the meeting by the governors, which was still on as of the time of filing this report (11.25pm) would discuss how to deal with the numerous crises affecting the PDP and how to tackle them, especially with the challenge coming from the major opposition party, the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2015 elections.
A source close to the party’s top hierarchy told our correspondent that the governors would want to handle the issue of whether to remove Tukur or not once and for all.
He said, “The meeting by the governors would decide whether to remove Tukur or not and those likely to succeed him. The governors are not happy with the runnings of the party at all.”
Meanwhile, Tukur in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Oliver Okpala, has appealed to members of the party to learn to live together in peace.
He said this in his message to Nigerians as they prepare for the celebration of Christmas and New Year festivities.
He said, “While wishing Nigerians, particularly Christians the best of the Christmas festivities and prosperous New Year, may I utilise this opportunity to stress the urgent need for Nigerians to use this period to seek the face and intervention of God in institutionalising brotherly care and peace both in our polity and dear country Nigeria.
“I call on all Nigerians irrespective of tribe, religion or ethnic affiliation to henceforth see their fellow Nigerians as their brothers and sisters belonging to one corporate entity known as Nigeria.
“I further entreat Nigerians to eschew bitterness, rancour and acrimony in their social, political and economic dealings with fellow Nigerians.”
