The yearly contract regime and sign on fees for players in the Nigerian Premier league has been outlawed by the League Management Company (LMC).
The decision to the effect was reached at a meeting between the Club Owners’ representatives and the league managers in Abuja on Monday night.
The Club’s Owner acting scribe, Alloy Chukwuemeka, who addressed a joint press conference with the Nduka Irabor led LMC team yesterday in Abuja, said that the sign on fees and the one year contract regime for players and the technical crew has been abolished.
He said in its place the players will now earn enhanced salary scheme and be place on a three years contract with their club sides.
“Sign on fees as part of contractual arrangement between clubs and their players and technical staff have been abolished from 2013/14 season and that a player’s enhanced salary scheme will come into effect with a monthly minimum wage of N150, 000.
No complaints of non payment of sign on fees by players and technical staff shall be entertained by the LMC. However, all clubs with outstanding sign on fee’ indebtedness to players and technical staff for 2012/2013 league season have been given one year moratorium to ensure the liquidation of such debts as part of requirements for registration for 2014/15 season,” Alloy explained.
He also revealed that the LMC and the clubs agreed that the short term contracts for players have been abolished and no player shall be offered a contract less than three years except those who have played for ten seasons or above in the league.
Alloy explained that such players who have been offered three years contract can only contemplate a transfer out of the club after serving a minimum of one football season.
He said the LMC has been empowered to apply relevant sanctions on any club that approaches a player without first notifying the current club of such player.
