Kano Assembly Speaker Resigns after Mass Defection!

The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon Gambo Sallau on Tuesday resigned his position as the head of the legislative arm of government in the state.

Sallau’s resignation came on the heels of Monday’s defection of 26 out of the 31 lawmakers elected on the platform of the PDP in the House from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress. The defection changed the face of the House as the APC now has 33 members out of the 40-member house.

The Speaker apparently chose to give himself a soft-landing, following his resolve to stay in the PDP  which no longer controls the majority and as such, there was a very strong likelihood of being impeached.

While speaking on radio in Kano, he pointed out that his decision was based on the fact that his party has become the “opposition party”. In his speech, he said “I, Gambo Sallau, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, hereby announce my resignation as the Speaker. Now that the PDP has become an opposition party, I will not continue to be the Speaker of the House.”

He thanked members of the House, the state government and the general public for the unwavering support they gave him since he became Speaker two years ago.
