Some protesters on Tuesday stormed the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osogbo, Osun State, protesting the retention of the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ambassador Rufus Akeju, by INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega.

The protesters, under the aegis of Osun Liberation Movement, carried placards and vowed to stop the REC from conducting the August 9, 2014 governorship election in the state.

Some of the placards read, ‘Akeju must leave  Osun now’; ‘We don’t have confidence in Akeju’; ‘Jega, remove Akeju now’;  ‘Akeju must  be redeployed without further delay.’

The protesters disrupted the stakeholders’ meeting called by the INEC to present the electronic copies of the voter register for the election.

Policemen were drafted to the INEC office to prevent possible breakdown of law or order.

The spokesperson of the group, Mr.Hamzat Ademola, who addressed journalists after the protest, asked Jega to redeploy the REC, alleging that Akeju would not conduct a credible election because he had been a loyalist of a leader of the All Progressives Congress.

Ademola said there was no way a bias umpire would be fair to all concerned, stressing that it was better to remove Akeju and bring  an unbiased REC.

He said, “We have facts to back up our position. Stakeholders have no confidence in him and to nip any impending crisis in the bud, Akeju should be transferred from Osun State without further delay.”

The Administrative Secretary of INEC in the state, Mr. Oladipo Oladapo, appealed to stakeholders in the state to be calm, assuring them that the commission would conduct credible election.

Speaking at the presentation of the copies of the voter register, Oladapo said, “The presentation of voter register is not just a step to achieving solid foundation for the forthcoming governorship election, but a critical and fundamental building block in the electoral process to firmly establish the cornerstone for transparent, free, fair and credible elections.”
