2015: INEC Registers UPN

Prof Attahiru Jega

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered the United Party of Nigeria (UPN), a party allegedly owned by political associates of President Goodluck Jonathan.

The party, which apparently is a reawakening of the Second Republic party under Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo is now under the interim chairmanship of Dr Frederick Fasehun, founder of the Odu’a People’s Congress (OPC) in the South West.

UPN, which was inaugurated under its leader and the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo in 1978, was the dominant party in the South Western region in that republic.

However, according to a statement by INEC’s Director, Voter Education and Publicity, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, the new party has met all legal requirements for registration.

According to the terse release, “the commission at its meeting held on Thursday 17th, April 2014, approved the registration of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), the applicant having met the legal requirements for registration. The registration of UPN brings to 26 the total number of political parties in Nigeria”

It was gathered that the application for registration of UPN to INEC since July, 2013.

Confirming the press release to Leadership, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC chairman Kayode Idowu, explained why it delayed adding “at a point they had a factional problem which made the processing of the application go the way it did, that was why it took some time.”

Dr Frederick Faseun, who is said to enjoy political romance with the Presidency and PDP has been spare heading the revival of UPN. Faseun has however denied that the UPN is “a political disciple of PDP”, just as the presidency has also denied being behind the resuscitation of the party.

Interim Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief Bisi Akande, had last year, described the move by the founder of Oodua People’s Congress, Dr. Fredrick Fasehun to resuscitate the party as a ploy by Jonathan to destabilise the country.

But the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Dr. Ahmed Gulak replied asking the ACN chairman to count the President out of the alleged destabilisation plot.

The UPN however died after a military take-over in 1983, which also ousted the Alhaji Shehu Shagari National Party of Nigeria (NPN) led national government.
