Nigerian military asks Abuja residents to endure Nyanya gridlock

The Nigerian military on Tuesday asked Abuja residents to endure the gridlock caused by check points on the Nyanya-Abuja Highway as it is part of security measures to keep terrorism at bay.

The Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade, in a statement, said “the security measures will be reviewed as more equipment and additional support are introduced to ease the gridlock.”

Assuring residents that the measures are not punitive, Mr. Olukolade said the checks on incoming vehicles was necessitated by Nigeria’s security threats.

He also called for support and understanding from the public, stating that the gridlock caused by the check point is only a temporary measure for the best interest of the public.

Following last Monday’s bomb attack on the populous Nyanya Motor Park, the Nigerian military set up a check point on the Nyanya-Abuja Highway.

Residents in Kugbo, Karu, Nyanya, and Mararaba have lamented the heavy gridlock caused by the military on the road.

A 32-year-old Nwamaka Loretta living in Kurudu, a suburb of Abuja, which is about 5.7 kilometres away from Nyanya, said she spends over one hour on the Nyanya road.

“Usually, I spend 40 minutes before I get to work, that is with the normal Nyanya traffic but with new check point, I now spend more than one hour on Nyanya road before getting to Abacha barrack,” Ms. Loretta said.
