A group of senators on Thursday appealed to the Federal Government and the West African Examination Council to extend the ongoing West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination in order to accommodate the abducted female students of Government Girls College, Chibok, Borno State.
The senators, appealed to the Federal Government and WAEC to allow the girls sit for their final papers elsewhere outside the state, especially the Federal Capital Territory, with a pledge to provide logistics support.
Spokesperson of the group of lawmakers, Senator Magnus Abe, in an interview with journalists said, “Government must not allow the Boko Haram sect to record cheap victory of truncating the girls’ dream of acquiring education.”
Abe said, “We call on the Federal Government, and particularly, the WAEC to help these girls so that they can write their final exams elsewhere.
“In doing so, they should put in place, adequate security measures for them to sit for their examinations and also, make sure that if need be, they can be taken out of Borno, and even bring them here to Abuja to conclude the examination.
“The dream of these girls should not be thwarted by the Boko Haram. This is not a time for blame-game on any side but the whole nation should rise as one to ensure that the other girls in the custody of this sect are released and reunited with their parents, unharmed.
“We should all work with the Borno State Government to secure the release of the remaining girls. We are also parents and we plead that the dream of these girls should not be allowed to end because of this unfortunate and harrowing incident.”
Abe said his colleagues were prepared to use their good offices and influence to ensure that the education of the girls did not stop.
It will be recalled that the Boko Haram insurgents, on Monday night, abducted about 129 female students of a public school in Borno State, who were writing their WAEC examinations.
The abducted students, according to security sources, were among the over 250 WAEC/SSCE candidates of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok in the southern part of Borno.
Some insurgents had invaded the school on Monday night, broke into the hostels and ordered the girls out in their night wears.
They were reportedly forced into the school bus and other vehicles they brought, shot sporadically and sped off.
