Reports by the various appeal committees set up by the All Progressives Congress to look into the conduct of state congresses is to top the agenda of the party’s National Executive Committee meeting holding on Tuesday (tomorrow).
Our correspondent gathered in Abuja, on Sunday, that the party’s leadership had begun high level consultations in order to reconcile individuals and feuding groups, ahead of the meeting.
An informed party source, who pleaded for anonymity so as not to jeopardise ongoing peace moves, said the party’s leaders were beginning to realise that they could no longer afford to live in denial.
According to the source, the letter written by the party’s National Vice-Chairman, South-South, Chief Tom Ikimi, to the National Chairman served “as a wakeup call.”
He told The PUNCH that “consultations have started among the party’s leaders. (Tom) Ikimi’s letter which became public after the defection of some party members in Edo State, tells you how serious the matter has become.
“The disaffection did not start today. If you recall, at our last National Summit, the former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Sheriff, tried to draw attention to some of the issues but some people felt he chose the wrong forum.
“There is still time to address these issues. All that is needed to do is to ensure justice and fairness. You don’t elect or appoint into positions and you don’t allow them function.
“Those on the grounds at the ward, local government and various state levels know better. You cannot ignore those who laboured to form the party because you want to attract new members.”
