LASG sets up emergency committee in schools

The Lagos State Government has asked secondary schools in the state to inaugurate emergency management committees to help train students on how to manage emergency situations.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said this had become necessary to reduce incidence of accidents in schools and homes in the state.

He made the remark on Monday while presenting relieve materials to the management of the Badagry Senior Grammar School, which hostel was gutted by fire in February 2014.

He said, “Schools should start inaugurating emergency management committees to give kids emergency training in case of any emergency that may occur within the school premises and houses.

“We also want parents to be safety conscious. They should use good electrical fittings.”

Oke-Osanyintolu said the state governor had approved the training of 10 people from each of the local emergency committee in the state’s local government areas and local council development areas.

“This is because LASEMA cannot be everywhere at the same time and we want this people to be properly trained to handle emergency situations on their own. But they may call on us for help when and where necessary,” he added.

While making the presentation of the relieve materials which included, mattresses, pillows, buckets, blankets, bars of soap, cooking utensils and mosquito nets, Oke-Osanyintolu said the gesture was a way of redeeming some of the electoral promises of Governor Babatunde Fashola.

The General Manager said that the February fire incident destroyed property worth millions of naira before it was put out by the combined effort of the primary responders.

He further stated that LASEMA had done the post-disaster enumeration of the affected properties to ascertain the extent of loss for recommendation to the state government.

He added that the Ministry of Works had been mandated by the state government to carry out the reconstruction of the affected structures in the school.

The school Principal, Mr. Ganiu Ajao, while thanking the govenrment for the materials, said the intervention would boost the students’ morale to be better in their studies.
