Nigeria Government Confirms New Boko Haram Threats to Schools

PRESS BRIEFING BY MR. MIKE OMERI, CORDINATOR, NCIMC AT THE NATIONAL BRIEFING CENTRE, ABUJA ON MONDAY MAY 19, 2014.

1. President’s Visit to Paris, France

The visit of the President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan (GCFR) to Paris, France last week for an international coalition against Boko Haram is part of the effort of the government to stem the tide of insecurity in the country. By this action, the threat of Boko Haram is not just a Nigerian problem, but a regional challenge. Accordingly, Mr President reiterates his commitment to providing total security for all Nigerians.

2. Bomb Blast in Kano on Sunday May 18, 2014.

We can confirm to you the reported bomb blast in Kano, although no one has claimed responsibility. Another attempted attack was foiled this morning by members of the security forces also in Kano. This underscores the heinous nature of the activities of Boko Haram for which the government has continually advised Nigerians to be security conscious of their environment.

3. Visits to Chibok by Media Organisations and Other Persons

While the Centre appreciates the effort of the media at adequately informing and educating the world on the current security problems in the country, we wish to inform all media organizations that the security situation around Chibok is still fluid. Presently, the affected location is an active crime scene and a military operational area.

Therefore, much as the Centre does not intend to restrict the activities of the media in the performance of their duty, it is strongly advised that media organizations must not take steps that will jeopardize the safety of their staff or compromise the crime scene. Any media organization wishing to visit Chibok should approach the appropriate authorities for guidance and advice, in the interest of their safety.

4. New Boko Haram Threats to Schools

This report has been confirmed in Benue State, but there are grounds to suspect that the reported threats issued by Boko Hram to Schools in Makurdi must be the handiwork of mischief makers. However, the security authorities have been alerted and the necessary personnel deployed to the appropriate locations within the metropolis.
