Controversy as Ogun Labour Party adopts two candidates for 2015 governorship poll

The Ogun Labour Party is in crisis.
The Ogun State Chapter of Labour Party, LP, has adopted two governorship aspirants as its candidates for the 2015 Governorship poll; a development which is now causing confusion within the party.
PREMIUM TIMES’ investigation revealed that the party leadership issued separate letters of adoption to the two aspirants: Gboyega Isiaka, a known political protégée of former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel; and a federal lawmaker, Abiodun Akinlade, who is currently representing Yewa/Ipokia Federal Constituency at the National Assembly.
Ironically, the two separate letters given to the two aspirants were signed by the controversial Labour Party Chairman, Simeon Olabode, and Secretary, Sunday Oginni.
Our findings revealed that while the letter of adoption was issued for Mr. Isiaka on March 22, the party leaders issued Mr. Akinlade’s on December 13.
The news of the two adoptions is worsening the confusion in the Ogun Labour Party, which on Friday expelled Mr. Daniel from its fold.
Messrs Olabode and Oginni have remained unreachable since their pronouncement of Mr. Daniel’s suspension on Friday.
While reacting to the adoption of Mr. Akinlade, Mr. Isiaka described is as a comedy.
“To me, the yesterday adoption of Akinlade was what I will call a comedy. It is what is called awada kerikeri; it was a charade. I am a party man, and I don’t need to engage them in shady deal.
“We are to have a meeting soon, and I think due process must be followed before anything is done. I repeat, what they did is Awada Kerikeri (comedy),” Mr. Isiaka said.
However, while reacting to his adoption, Mr. Akinlade said, “The news of my adoption by the Ogun State Executive Council of Labour Party as the official flag bearer of the party for the 2015 governorship election came as a pleasant surprise to me.”
  • He went on to thank to the party’s executive.

“I am aware that this is just the first step in a long process which includes endorsement by the teeming members of our party through the state congress and ratification by the national executive council of our party. I want to assure that I will do all within my powers to live up to the expectation of the party and by the grace of Almighty God lead the Labour Party to victory come 2015.
“Let me also salute the other gubernatorial aspirants under the platform of our great party and plead with them to join hand with me and other stakeholders to ensure that our party comes out victorious,” he said.
Mr. Akinlade also reacted to the suspension of Mr. Daniel, saying he was against such a step.
“The purported suspension of Otunba Gbenga Daniel from the Labour Party as reported by some media is totally unacceptable to me. I want to believe that this is case of misquotation or misrepresentation.
“Otunba Gbenga Daniel as a two term former governor of Ogun state, an experienced politician who has made his mark in the business world before joining politics, is definitely a great asset to any party and must therefore be courted to join Labour Party and not suspended as being reported.
“I would therefore like to humbly plead with Otunba Daniel to take the purported suspension with a pinch of salt, come fully on board the Labour Party train and play the leadership role that he is known for,” he said.
