Aliyu Zubairu |
A reporter with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Yola , Aliyu Zubairu and his wife, Nazira, died early yesterday in fire incident at their home in Yola.
Family sources said the fire started from an electric spark around 1:00 am after electricity was restored to the area as they slept.
“Smoke billowing from the house attracted the attention of neighbours. Zubairu had already suffocated while his wife who was conscious when neighbours broke in through the window insisted she would come not out until her husband was rescued, and within seconds the fire consumed the whole house,” a neighbour said. General Manager of NTA Yola, Mallam Adamu Yusuf Tafawa Balewa, urged the family and colleagues of the deceased to take his death in good faith, saying, “We cannot question God.”
The chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Adamawa State council, Salisu Mohammad, described Zubairu as a God fearing, friendly and hard working journalist, and prayed for the repose of his soul. He appealed to journalists to register with the national insurance scheme for their families to get financial support in the event of death. Until his death, Zubaira covered the Adamawa State House of Assembly for the NTA.
