Opeyemi Bamidele |
Labour Party governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Opeyemi Bamidele, has promised the people of the state that he would only serve for a single term of four years if elected as the governor of the state in the June 21 election.
Bamidele said this at a press conference at his residence in Iyin Ekiti on Wednesday.
The aspirant, who is a member of the House of Representatives, said that his promise not to seek a reelection was a personal sacrifice and not the decision of the party.
Bamidele also promised that he would conduct election into the local government councils as parts of his policies, which he said, would bring development closer to the grassroots.
The lawmaker pledged that his government would run an all-encompassing social welfare programmes which would benefit the youth, women, aged, physically challenged and children below age five.
He said, “The situation in Ekiti now calls for sacrifices because part of what destabilises a state most is when the incumbent is seeking reelection or trying to implement a programme the people don’t believe in.
“I quite understand and believe that I am capable of assembling a solid team that will turn around the fortunes of the state within four years. With my experiences as a public servant, I will hit the ground running.
“For Ekiti to be united, there is the need for the political class to realign forces and make sacrifices for us to remain as one. After my reign, I won’t want anybody to be fighting over which senatorial district should produce the governor.
“So, the decision that I am going to rule the states for just four years is personal and not the position of my party.”
Meanwhile, the Ekiti Youth Parliament has denied endorsing the incumbent governor of the state, Kayode Fayemi, for a second term.
The newly elected President of the parliament, Famuyibo Oluwasegun, made the denial in a statement on Wednesday.
He warned politicians in the state not to see youths as agents of violence, adding that they should be used to enforce change.
He said, “We are obliged to make it abundantly clear to all youths that we are not tools in the hands of any politicians. We have the mandate to be the voice of the Ekiti youths and be the trumpet of their concrete desires, and as such, eschew partisan politics in its entirety.
“Consequently upon this, we need to clarify this as against the last minutes of the parliament meeting that Governor Fayemi has been endorsed for second term. At no time did we agree to endorse Dr. Kayode Fayemi for second term.
