National Conference Inaguration Ceremony: Anyim’s 22-minute sleep

The amount of responsibility bestowed on the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. Pius Anyim, in organising the conference is indeed enormous.  It was his office that compiled the list of delegates, got the venue, prepared the bags and its contents, supervised accreditation and arranged other logistics for the smooth take-off of the conference.

It was probably the enormity of his responsibility that made Anyim doze off on the day President Goodluck Jonathan inaugurated the conference committee.

Anyim, who welcomed delegates to the conference, slept throughout the 22 minutes that President Jonathan spoke. But intermittently, Anyim shook his head as delegates clapped in response to points raised by the President in his speech.

Although no provision was made for members to sleep in the conference hall, some delegates were also seen napping. Their sleep was, however, interrupted when other delegates raised their voices in heated arguments.

One of the delegates had asked the Chairman of the conference, Justice Idris Kutigi, to caution journalists against reports on sleeping members. But a delegate from the South-West, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, told the conference that the floor should not be used as a sleeping ground.

“If instead of doing what we are supposed to do, we come here to sleep, then it is not a bad thing if journalists report that,” Odumakin said.
