Plateau University student shot dead on campus

The students of the Plateau State University, PLASU, Bokkos, on Tuesday, protested the death of a fellow student, shot on Monday by gunmen.
According to witnesses, two other students were injured in the incident.
A student who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES said, “The three students were shot late Monday night around the hostel and one of them died instantly.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Chris Olakpe, confirmed the incident.
“We are very much aware (of it) and our men have taken control of the situation,” he said. “I will feed the press with more details tomorrow.”
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the two injured were receiving medical attention at an undisclosed hospital.
Following the shooting, students of the institution, on Tuesday afternoon, took to the university campus and its environs in protest. Academic activities were disrupted.
The protesting students destroyed security checkpoints at the entrance of the university. The members of the Special Task Force on Jos crisis posted to the institution reportedly took to their heels at the height of the protest.
The protesters also disrupted free flow of vehicular movements to and from the headquarters of Bokkos Local Government Area.
A commercial driver, Danjuma Sulie, who witnessed the protest, said that most drivers deserted the route for fear of being attacked. He claimed that vehicles and goods worth millions of naira were burnt by the protesting students. Some Bokkos residents who live close to the campus were also reported to have deserted their homes in fear of the students’ rampage.
The university’s public relations officer, John Agams, could not be reached for comments at press time.
The University last week matriculated 600 new students, with a warning that the students be law abiding.
