A former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly and a delegate to the National Conference, Mr. Olawale Abdulsalam, on Tuesday said government must provide adequate welfare, training and retirement benefits to tackle age falsification among public servants.
The member of the Committee on Public Service identified corruption and unfounded fears of the future as part of the reasons why government workers falsified their ages.
In an interview with journalists in Abuja, Abdulsalam argued that corruption was not limited to public service but also existed in the private sector.
he said, “What we need to do is to be sincere. The civil service is part of the society and part of the Nigerian problem. We have to take a holistic look at the issue of corruption vis-a-vis how it affects the civil service.
“If you look at the civil service, one would ask is the welfare okay. Is the training okay? Most of the civil servants are afraid to retire; they falsify their age and falsify their documents because they are afraid of what tomorrow holds for them. All these are corruption
“Their thoughts while in service are pre-occupied by when I retire what do I do, how do I survive? We have to look at that aspect such that the day you enlist into the civil service, government must continually remind you that you will retire someday; hence you need to start making preparations.
“Once you have that system in place, for you to now say you want to embezzle money will reduce because you know there is a system that will take care of you after retirement”
