Chelsea/Atlético: Key minute finished us, says manager Jose Mourinho following Champions League exit
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said one crucial minute in the second half had torpedoed his side’s Champions League dreams and claimed that for much of the game his side were a match for Atlético Madrid.
Mourinho pinpointed the superb save by Thibaut Courtois to stop John Terry’s header and then Diego Costa’s penalty soon afterwards as the turning point.
“I think the game until a certain minute was very, very equal,” Mourinho said. “The first half was more ours than them, but finished 1-1, which was a completely open result, and in the second half one minute decided everything - a minute where Atlético’s goalkeeper makes an impossible save to John Terry’s header and in the same minute is the penalty which kills the game. After that, 2-1 to Atlético is almost impossible, after that there was only one team.
“For about 60 minutes we had more of the game than them.”
Mourinho admitted that the equaliser was a poor one to concede but he added: “I cannot be critical with a group of players that from day one is giving everything, trying everything.”
“We have problems with injuries, suspensions and players who can’t play in the Champions League. It’s disappointing to lose but I am proud of them. I prefer to say we did everything that was possible for us and if we scored to go 2-1 up we would have been on top of the game.
“Next season will be better than this season – that’s our objective – the objective of everybody.”
